Nikola Jokic injury update: Timetable and return prospects

Jokic is out with left knee injury

Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic remains sidelined, still recovering from a hyperextended left knee he suffered during a Dec. 29 road game against the Miami Heat. Jokic was injured near the end of the first half when teammate Spencer Jones stepped on his foot, forcing the three-time MVP to leave the game and miss the second half. Denver later diagnosed the injury as a hyperextension with a bone bruise but no serious ligament damage, much to the relief of fans and the team.

Estimated time to leave court

The Nuggets said Jokic will be re-evaluated in four weeks to give medical staff a clearer picture of his rehab progress before making any return decisions. The timeline suggests he could return as early as late January, although many sources believe the team is aiming to have him back before the All-Star break in mid-February at the latest.

League observers described the current outlook as “optimistic” because the injury did not damage the ligaments. As a result, Jokic avoided what could have been a longer absence. Still, missing a month or more would be a significant blow to Denver’s title hopes this season.

Nuggets adjust without leader

Without Jokic in the lineup, the Nuggets are relying on their depth and role players to keep up in the Western Conference. They’re still among the top teams, but Denver has struggled offensively at times without key players. Other starters have also missed time with injuries, adding pressure on veterans like Jamal Murray and second-tier scorers to step up in Jokic’s absence.

Nuggets head coach David Adelman emphasized the team’s “survival mode” mentality, focusing on winning games and staying competitive while Jokic rehabs his knee. Denver’s schedule doesn’t get any easier, so the Nuggets will have to navigate tough games without their MVP.

What this means for the MVP race

Jokic entered the season as one of the leading candidates for NBA MVP, excelling in points, rebounds and assists. Missing significant playing time could hurt his chances of winning an award that requires a minimum number of games played. Fans and analysts now expect players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to win early MVP honors without Jokic.

Looking to the future

The Nuggets will keep a close eye on Jokic’s progress in the coming weeks. If the team keeps him on track and responds to rehab, a late January return is still a possibility. Otherwise, a comeback during the All-Star break in early to mid-February appears to be a realistic plan. With the playoffs approaching, both schedules provide the Denver Nuggets a chance to reset and return their stars.
