Zizou Bergers earned the biggest win of his career on Tuesday to help Belgium move 1-0 ahead of Canada in the Confederations Cup.

The 26-year-old beat world number five Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-2 in Sydney, where he lost to China’s Zhang Zhizhen earlier this week in his first match of the season.

“Really happy with the performance. I think it also shows our strength. We can fall but we get up and try to get better [than] “We were there the day before,” Burgess said, “and that’s what we did, and I’m just so grateful to have this team by my side.”

Burgess earned his second top-10 victory (2-10) in 1 hour, 28 minutes, having beaten then-world No. 9 Andrey Rublev 10 months earlier in Miami. The Belgians had never won the Confederations Cup before.

“I actually forgot that this was my second top-10 finish, so that’s actually huge, especially with the convincing way the race was played,” Burgess said. “I just looked at it as a game. It was a little bit of a different format, so we were still behind. We still had a lot to win today, so it was more of a focus and I just had to get the job done today.”

Auger-Aliassime had the best season of his career in 2025, reaching the U.S. Open semifinals and competing in the Nitto ATP Finals. He was sharp in his first match of the season against Zhang but couldn’t dominate in the same way against Burgess, who saved all five break points he faced.

Canada must win a game in Group B to clinch the title. If Belgium wins 3-0, they will advance from the group. Belgium’s Elise Mertens will next face Canada’s Victoria Mboko.
