Coco Gauff did double duty for the United States in Saturday’s Confederations Cup match, as she teamed up with Christian Harrison to help the defending champions beat Argentina 2-1 in Group A.
Sebastian Baez beat world number six Taylor Fritz to earn his second top-10 finish, giving Argentina a surprising lead in the match. However, Goff secured victory for the United States in the mixed team event in Perth, defeating Solana Serra before teaming up with Harrison for a decisive 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maria Lourdes Carr and Guido Andreozzi.
Goff and Harrison called the shots for long stretches in an impressive doubles performance. They dominated the baseline exchanges and were sharper in front of the net to claim victory after 63 minutes. The U.S. team currently leads 1-0 in Group A and will face Spain next.
Gauff’s meeting with Serra was the pair’s first meeting on the WTA Tour with Mercedes-Benz and Serra’s first top-10 matchup in his career.
“I feel like I can play better, too, which is more exciting,” Goff said on the court after the game. “It’s always tough starting the first game of the season, especially against an opponent like her and someone who competed yesterday. I’m really happy with how I managed all those emotions.”
Gauff led 5-0 with two break points and three hold points, and saved Serra’s two break opportunities. The Argentinian number one did come on, holding serve in the sixth game, much to the delight of the Perth fans.
After two double faults, Gauff rallied and won the first set with four straight points in just half an hour, limiting Serra’s serve to just seven points.
The second set will be a replica of Gauff, who was undefeated in singles in the Fed Cup last year, winning 6-1 to seal the double-bread victory.
Argentina’s victory in the mixed doubles ensured their top spot in Group A and advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time in three games with victory over Spain on Friday.
Previously, Baez defeated world No. 6 Fritz 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The 25-year-old defeated Spain’s Jaume Munnar in Friday’s opener of the mixed team event and produced one of the best performances of his career against Fritz, who showed signs of rust throughout the two-hour and 35-minute contest.
“I’m happy now,” Baez said. “We have been looking for this feeling for many years and I am happy to give this to Argentina. Thank you to the audience. I felt very comfortable today.”
Baez had lost all five of his previous matches against Fritz at the Lexus ATP, but he recovered from a set and a break to put Argentina ahead 1-0. The No. 45 player in the PIF ATP Live Rankings crucially saved a break point at 5-4 on serve in the third set and sealed the victory with a simple open volley. In the first round of Group A, Argentina defeated Spain 3-0.
