NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tristan Jarry

Penguins won’t retain Tristan Jarry, which essentially puts Oilers out
sports network: Elliot Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas talk 32 Thoughts: Podcast – Are the Canucks trading for Quinn Hughes? An episode where the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins talk about the Tristan Jarry trade. The Penguins won’t retain any of Jarry’s salary, and Jarry still has two years left, making it difficult for the Oilers to do that.

Bukauskas: “Another name you’ve seen online the past few days is Tristan Jarry. Linked to the Edmonton Oilers. I mean, footage of the hug between Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard seemed to be lingering after Thursday’s game against Seattle. Everybody’s trying to decipher, okay, ‘What, what does this mean? What does this mean?’
NHL Rumors: Can the Montreal Canadiens challenge Phillip Danault?
Here’s another installment of Saturday’s headliners, Elliott. Jarry and the Oilers, what happened? “
Friedman: “There was a post on Friday night that said the trade was done and the retention rate was 50 percent. You know, one thing that was absolutely true was Edmonton showed a lot of interest in Jarry. Like, it’s true. I don’t remember who was the first person to report it, but it’s true.
I had to figure out what was fact and what was fiction. I’ll tell you, the Oilers actually like the idea. It’s also true that it does explain a lot to me about Picard, Kyle, that you and I have talked about, and he admitted to you that he kind of knew. I think he knows if they get Jarry, he’s out.
That’s because I later found out that Skinner wouldn’t be Jarry, but Jarry and Skinner. You know, one of the things we talk about a lot is that the Oilers aren’t going to change goals unless they really believe they can make progress. I think you could make the argument that the combination of Skinner and Jarry, assuming both guys stay healthy, is an improvement. They hope that’s all they can do, that the two of them will push each other and force each other to be better. This is their goal.
Now that what happened is over, I’m told Pittsburgh has absolutely no desire to retain. Jarry has two years left and a salary of just under $5.4 million, and the Penguins have made it clear they won’t keep him if they do.
If you’re an Oilers fan, you know this is going to be hard for them to do. The Oilers are tight against the salary cap and right now they have a lot of injuries and players coming in and out and they have very few extra players. It’s like their roster is stuck. So even if they wanted to do a lot without money coming in and out, they really can’t. Kind of like what we discussed with New Jersey.
NHL Rumors: Will the Edmonton Oilers change their goalie this season?
So, I’m told, that makes this deal nearly impossible to get done unless the Oilers do the surgery themselves. I don’t believe they want to do this. So basically, what we have now is, yes, they do like Jarry. Yes, they would love to have a Jarry Skinner combo, or like to have it. But no, with the current situation, they can’t unless the body is out.
So basically, what I was told was, is this going to happen? Maybe. Do they want this? Yes, I think they would be interested. Will this happen? Very, very difficult, and probably won’t happen. “
