On December 9, the Philadelphia Flyers (16-9-3) hosted the San Jose Sharks (14-14-3), and both teams exceeded preseason expectations. The home team took advantage early and won 4-1.

The first quarter was all Flyers, but the icebreaker belonged to the Sharks as the defense collapsed. Collin Graf, with help from John Klingberg and Will Smith, posted his sixth time of the event in 11:33.
With less than a minute and a half left in the opening period, Philadelphia turned the tables. Christian Dvorak notched his seventh assist of the season — his 500th — with assists from Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecnyth Career point.

The score was closer in the second quarter (10-8 Flyers), but Philadelphia took advantage this time. Carl Grundström from the American Hockey League (AHL) joins the board in place of injured forward Tyson Foerster. The third period was pretty low-key – both teams combined for fewer than six shots until the Sharks cleared the net. With 1 minute and 43 seconds left in the game, Konecny scored a goal in the empty cage to win 4-1.
Between the pipes, Dan Vladař stepped up after conceding the first goal, turning the ball over for Philadelphia on 17 of 18 shots. In San Jose, Alex Nedelkovic scored 26 times in 29 games.

Next up, the Flyers will face the Vegas Golden Knights (14-6-8) at home on December 11 at 7 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Sharks are back on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs (14-11-4) on the same day and time (4 p.m. PST).
