NHL Rumors: Penguins, Blues, Red Wings, Oilers and Blue Jackets

Get a quick look at the Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, and Detroit Red Wings

Dan Rosen, NHL.com: (Mailbag) The Pittsburgh Penguins are returning to expectations after a hot start. Futures Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang will be available again later this season. It’s hard to see them being traded unless they want to leave, and hard to see Malkin not re-signing unless he wants to leave.

Everything looks bad in St. Louis. If the Blues show some energy as 2025 ends, they might consider some restructuring. If they want to shake things up, forward Brayden Schenn (salary cap hit: $6.5 million) and guard Justin Faulk (salary cap hit: $6.5 million) could be moved. Forward Jordan Kyrou, who will make $8.125 million annually through the 2030-31 season, may also be an option (he has trade protection).

John Gibson could add Sebastian Cossa to the NHL on waivers. Gibson hasn’t been great in Detroit so far. Sometimes it’s not easy for a goalkeeper to adapt to a new team. They haven’t given up on him yet.

NHL Rumors: Quinn Hughes situation could get interesting during Olympics

Is Tristan Jarry worth it to the Edmonton Oilers? Who would be interested in Kiefer Sherwood

Dan Rosen, NHL.com: (Mailbag) If the Edmonton Oilers don’t see Stuart Skinner as their net solution, it would make sense to move the pending UFA before the trade deadline. They clearly need to bring in someone else. Tristan Jarry has an injury history and essentially doubles Skinner’s salary cap hit. By 2027-28, Jarry will earn $5.375 million. The Oilers would only trade him if they thought he could win a trophy for them.

The Columbus Blue Jackets may have bigger needs on the blue line, but they should be one of the teams interested in Kiefer Sherwood. The 30-year-old man awaiting trial is from Columbus. He scored in the first nine, hitting, scoring and killing penalties.

Sherwood also makes sense for the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
