Montreal Canadiens blueline looks crowded going forward
Marco D’Amico of RG Media: The Montreal Canadiens now have defensemen Mike Matheson, Noah Dobson, Ryan Hutson and Kayden Gurler signed for at least the next five seasons. Also under contract are Arber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, Alexandre Carrier, Adam Engstrom and David Reinbacher. Something has to give in the future.
Guler has five years and $5.5 million left on his contract, but he’s third on the left field depth chart behind Hutson and Matheson. Can confirm TVA Sports’ Jean-Charles Lajoie’s statement that Guerle’s name has come up in trade talks, but that’s not surprising as other teams have been mentioning his name for a while. Over the past two offseasons, Western Conference teams have made requests and been denied.
The Canadiens like what Gule brings to the table and he appears to be a part of their plans going forward. Any decision the Canadiens make will likely involve Xhekaj, Struble, Engstrom and Reinbacher. A move for Linebach would probably be a bargain now and that’s not what they want to do.
To crack the top six, the Canadiens will likely have to include one of Xhekaj, Struble or Engstrom.
Maybe someone will put Alex Formenton on the offer sheet
