Oettinger ties with Belfour in Stars’ 4-3 win over Mammoth – Hockey Writer – Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars (16-5-4) unveiled their new jerseys that pay tribute to the 1999 Stanley Cup team and defeated the Utah Mammoths (12-10-3) 4-3 on Friday night at American Airlines Center.
Roope Hintz, Jamie Benn, Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston scored for the Stars. Jake Oettinger made 27 saves.
In a nod to the ’99 Cup team, Oettinger wore a new mask that paid homage to Ed Belfour’s “Eagle” mask. Oettinger tied Belfort with 160 wins for the third-most in franchise history, which makes it all the more poetic.
Logan Cooley, Kevin Looney and Jared McBain scored for the Mammoths. Vitek Vanecek made 24 saves.
game review
Just 57 seconds into the game, Cooley scored on a backdoor pass from Dylan Guenther to open the scoring.
The Mammoths doubled their lead at 12:17 thanks to a quick shot from Rooney, who scored his first goal as a member of the Mammoths.
Hintz got one back for the Stars on the power play when he tipped in a set shot from Miro Heiskanen.
It took Jamie Benn a few months to get to No. 400 on Saturday, but he got No. 401 at 8:16 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Alexander Petrovich sent a bouncing puck into the net from the right side, skipping two Utah sticks and passing directly to Benn, who blocked the puck and fired it past Vanecek.
Robertson gave the Stars a 3-2 lead just 62 seconds later. Kyle Capobianco fed Robertson from behind the net, and after Robertson’s original shot was saved, Robertson picked up the rebound and fired a backhand shot into the net.
At 16 minutes and 14 seconds, Lawson Krause shot the puck into the penalty area. McBain put on his glove and shot the ball in, tying the score at 3-3.
The tie was short-lived as Johnston restored the Stars’ one-goal lead on a five-on-three power play, finishing off Mikko Rantanen and Heiskanen’s tic-tac-toes. With this goal, Johnston became the first player in the NHL to reach double digits in power play goals, taking his tally to 10 this season.
The Mammoths outshot the Stars 30-28 but went 0 for 2 on the power play. The Stars took advantage of their personnel advantage and made 2 of 5 shots.
