Davis Cup final: Spain defeats Germany to advance to the final to face defending champion Italy

Both Spanish and German doubles pairs have endured high-stakes matches this week, but Kravitz and Putz prevailed in more dramatic circumstances, saving three match points shortly after 1am local time to complete Germany’s comeback against Argentina.

Granollers and Martinez dominated the first set and quickly took a 4-0 lead, but a break from Kravitz and Puez in the second set was enough to force the match into a decider.

However, the Spanish pair ended the match the stronger, scoring in the fourth game of the decider and holding on for the win at their first opportunity.

Carreno Busta got Spain off to the perfect start with a 6-4 7-6 (8-6) victory over Struff on Saturday afternoon.

At 5-4 in the second set, world No. 89 Carreno Busta failed to win the first three match points at 5-4 on Straff’s serve, then rallied from 1-6 down in the tie-break.

Zverev, the only top-10 singles player to compete in this year’s finals, said after his 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5) victory that he didn’t feel good before the match.

The out-of-form German made 28 unforced errors but was solid in the two tiebreaks against world number 36 Munnar.

However, defeat in the doubles means Germany’s wait to reach the final for the first time since 1993 continues.
