The Ultimate Highland Golf Trip – Golf News

Golf News’ Greg Evans reveals the magic of a Highland holiday at the famous Links House next to Royal Dornoch, where world-class golf combines with timeless Scottish hospitality.
A journey to the Scottish Highlands is always worth savoring, with its vast skies, windswept coastline and serene majestic landscapes making it one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world.
But when that journey includes a stay at an extraordinary hotel like this Links Houseright next to the sacred fairway Royal Dornoch Golf Clubit becomes truly memorable.
Our adventure began on a crisp October morning on a British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Inverness.
After picking up our rental car, we headed north through the rolling highland scenery to golspieDornoch, a charming coastal village between Dornoch and Brora, was the location for our first round of golf.
Golspee Golf Club – a true Highland gem
Arriving at Golspee around noon we received a warm welcome in the pro shop before heading out onto a course that perfectly embodies the character of Highland golf. Golspie’s layout is a clever blend of tree-lined avenues, heathland and parkland, providing both variety and challenge.
The fairways lead gently toward the sea and are framed by distant hills, while the greens are fast, true, and perfect, requiring deft shots.
While relatively short by modern standards (we played from the yellow tees), the course tests every club in the bag and rewards accuracy over power.
What makes Golspie so unique is that it has six golf courses, six parklands and six heath holes. The back-to-back par 3s at the end of the round were very memorable.
After golfing, we drove 25 minutes south to our home where we stayed for the next two nights: Links House Hotelan elegant and luxurious resort just a short walk from the first tee of Royal Dornoch.
Links House – elegance, comfort and plateau warmth
From the moment you step into Links House, you’ll know it’s something special.
The service is warm and understated, and the interiors are beautifully designed, blending classic Scottish tradition with modern comforts.

We were shown to our respective suites, each uniquely styled, spacious and beautifully appointed, with plush bedding, tasteful artwork and views that capture the tranquil beauty of Dornoch.
Two bottles of old fashioned cocktails were waiting for me, along with a lovely welcome letter from the general manager.
That night we ventured to the bar, sat by the fire, and then ate in the restaurant. Marathe hotel’s fine dining restaurant.
The menu focuses on Highland produce, venison, oysters, market beef and fish and seasonal vegetables, all presented with care.
Local ingredients are used in every dish, complemented by an excellent wine list and impeccable service. I can say that I had a great sleep in the most comfortable bed.

Mix with the locals in Brora
The next day we headed north again to watch the amazing “James Braid” Classic Brora Golf Club. After another warm welcome, we set off in the autumn sunshine to explore this absolute gem.
Holes 1-9 head north and holes 10-18 return to the clubhouse. Inward holes have more elevation changes. All the par 3s are outstanding.
There are electric fences around each green to protect the actual greens from local wildlife, and seeing the Highland cattle was an experience I’d never seen before.

Speaking of the greens, these greens were difficult to play and the green complexes were tricky, luckily I played my best golf and had a good score.
Before I left, I had to shop and buy in the specialty store as a reminder of my visit.
We fell in love with Brora and highly recommend a visit.
Back in Dornoch we ventured into the town that evening and visited Castle Hotel The bar and restaurant serve drinks and evening meals. This village exudes timeless charm.
Royal Dornoch – a golf paradise
The next morning the weather was clear and sunny, providing perfect conditions for our long awaited race. Royal Dornoch.
The day the club was collecting the keys to their new clubhouse it looked incredible.

Few courses in the world can rival its setting: fairways winding through golden sand dunes, greens perched on natural plateaus, and views across Dornoch Bay.
From tee shot to final putt, Royal Dornoch offers pure golf fun that is challenging yet fair, strategic yet fun.
It’s easy to see why Tom Watson once called it “the funniest thing I’ve ever experienced on a golf course.”

There’s something memorable about every hole, from the lofty greens and undulating fairways to the ever-present ocean breeze that keeps you focused.
The bunkers are deep and challenging, and the undulating fairways make this difficult but rewarding

This is a “must play” game for any golfer. Golfers of any level will enjoy this beautiful course.
I recommend getting ready a few minutes before your tee time and talking to the server, who will give you lots of valuable advice about the course and preferred tee boxes.
The perfect highland getaway
After the round we walked the 100 yards back to Links House, reluctantly packed our bags and checked out of this wonderful hotel.
Our journey back to Inverness was filled with that familiar sense of contentment, longing and that feeling you’ve discovered a truly special place and already want to return.
As we had a late night flight back to Heathrow from Inverness, we were at cabot heights Enjoy lunch in the clubhouse overlooking castle stewart stadium and discussed new Courses for both old and primary school students Will open in May 2026.
