Wild hold on to beat Hurricanes 4-3 in shootout – The Hockey Writers –

The Minnesota Wild host the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night, November 19, in the final of their last five home games. Both teams had wins, with the Minnesota Wild beating the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, November 16, and the Hurricanes defeating the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Monday, November 17.

The Wild’s injured list has grown again as they placed Ryan Hartman on injured reserve ahead of their game against the Hurricanes. Also on the injured list are Marco Rossi, Zach Bogosian and Nico Sturm, but both Bogosian and Sturm are close to returning to the lineup. The Hurricanes were missing Jalen Chatfield, who was injured last time out against the Wild, as well as Juha Jaska, Charles Alexis Legault, Jacob Slavin and Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

The goalie battle begins between the Wild’s Jesper Wohlstetter and the Hurricanes’ Frederik Andersen. The game started in the Wild’s favour, as the Hurricanes fought back, but the Wild prevailed in a shootout. This brings the Wild’s record to 10-7-4 and the Hurricanes’ record to 13-5-2.

The Wild got the game started early on with a goal from Brock Faber. He made it 1-0 with assists from Mats Zuccarello and Danila Yurov. The Wild extended their lead late in the period on a shorthanded goal by Matt Boldy, who went unassisted. It was the only goal of the quarter and the Wild took a 2-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter on a Jackson Black goal, ending Wallstetter’s unbeaten run at 175-12. He was assisted by Shane Walker and Logan Stankoven. It was the only goal from midfield and the Wild took a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.

Zuccarello scored 15 seconds into the third quarter, his first goal of the season. He made it 3-1 with assists from Kirill Kaprizov and Yurov. The Hurricanes responded with a goal from Sebastian Aho. He made it 3-2 with assists from Andrei Svechnikov and Seth Jarvis. Blake scored the Hurricanes’ second goal of the night with 1:05 left in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. He was assisted by Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere.

The game was tied and required overtime. However, no one scored and a penalty shootout was required. There was only one goal in the shootout, as Boldy helped the Wild win 4-3, while Wallstetter finished the game with 42 saves.

After a long home stretch, the Wild will travel to the road to face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, November 21st. The Hurricanes will also continue their trip north on the road to face the Winnipeg Jets.
