Capitals beat Oilers with 7-4 blowout – Hockey Writers – NHL News

The Washington Capitals host the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night (Nov. 19) to wrap up a three-game homestand. This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams, both of whom are hoping for a double-digit victory this season.
The Capitals are off to a 9-8-2 start, finishing last in the competitive Metropolitan Division. The Oilers have a record of 9 wins, 8 draws and 4 losses, ranking fifth in the Pacific Division.

The home team scored quickly, with both Alyakse Protas and Alex Ovechkin hitting baskets to give Washington an early lead. The Oilers fought back when Darnell Nurse’s spot-up shot found the back of the net just 1:01 into the second period, but the Capitals got right back in the game. Ryan Leonard took a loose puck and ripped another away from Stuart Skinner.
Nurse drove a play into traffic on the second play of the quarter to keep the back-and-forth battle going. With about 7 minutes left in the game, the offense finally calmed down and the U.S. went into halftime with a 3-2 lead. The home team also led 11-9.
The second period was much different, with the only goal coming nearly 12 minutes into the game when Leonard rushed up and scored his second goal of the night. Washington ended the quarter with a 4-2 lead, and the team still led 16-14.
Edmonton got within one point early in the third quarter when David Tomasek tipped in a goal from Logan Thompson. Less than four minutes later, the U.S. restored its lead on a cross-ice pass from Anthony Beauvillier. One minute and 10 seconds later, Leon Draisaitl scored a power-play goal to bring the score back to one goal. The Oilers had to tie Skinner with two minutes remaining, but Tom Wilson tied the game with two empty netters.
The Capitals won 7-4 and the Oilers won 28-21.
The Capitals’ top performers included Wilson and Leonard with two goals each, while John Carlson and Connor McMichael each had three assists. For the Oilers, Nurse scored two goals, Connor McDavid had two assists, and Draisaitl scored one goal each.
The Capitals’ next game is tomorrow night (November 20) as they travel north to face the Montreal Canadiens. Puck dropoff at the Bell Center is 7 p.m. ET.
The Oilers will play again tomorrow night as they continue their road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Puck drop time at Benchmark International Arena is 7:30 p.m. ET.
