Winnipeg Jets beat Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 for second straight win – The Hockey Writers – Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 on Tuesday night at the Canadian Life Centre.

Mark Scheifele had a team-high three points (all assists) while five different Jets scored. Winnipeg improved its record to 12 wins, 7 draws and 0 losses with this win and has won two games in a row, while Columbus fell to 10 wins, 8 draws and 2 losses with the loss.

At 7 minutes and 35 seconds of the first quarter, the Jets opened the scoring. Adam Lowry received a nifty pass from Nino Niederreiter and fired a shot past Elvis Merzlikins from inside for his first goal of the season.

The Blue Jackets tied the game at 1-1 at 18:27 when Miles Wood hit a shot past Dylan DeMelo and drilled a backhand shot into Eric Comrie’s fifth on the break.

The Jets regained the lead when Josh Morrissey caught a cross-ice pass from Scheifele on the run with 1:12 left in the second period.

They extended their lead to 3-1 on the power play at 15:30 when Neal Pionk scored his first goal of the season just above the blue line.

In the first 6 minutes and 23 seconds of the third quarter, the two teams scored a combined three goals. At 2 minutes and 45 seconds, Kyle Connor found a small hole and sneaked in a short-side goal to extend the lead to 4-1. Just 1 minute, 19 seconds later, Zach Werenski scored his sixth point of the season and 400th of his career on a quick shot off Comrie’s pads to bring the Blue Jackets within two.

The Jets regained a three-goal lead with 2:19 to play after Logan Stanley scorched the top shelf with a hard hit. The defenseman benefited from Scheifele’s backhand ignored pass. Although both teams had some great chances in the round of 13, the goal capped the scoreline.

Notes and Observations

The Jets celebrated Winnipeg’s large Filipino community with a Filipino Heritage Night.
