The first phase was mostly a “going through the motions” process, lasting a little over 17 minutes. The Islanders did get on the board first after the puck deflected off Emil Heineman’s skate and somehow got past Scott Wedgewood. The Avalanche tried to run the offense, but the passes didn’t seem to connect like they wanted. The energy and effort are there, but nothing comes together. Wedgwood received the ball after the goal and made a save for the Avalanche, reducing the score gap to 1 point. The game was tied at 7-7, but the Islanders took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Avalanche scored two goals in the second period. Just 4 minutes and 32 seconds into the middle of the game, Cale Makar hit Ross Colton with a long pass into the Islanders area, and the home team tied the score. Colton caught Ilya Sorokin off guard with a quick wrist shot that slotted between the goalkeeper and the right post. Then, less than 1:19 later, Victor Olofsson caught Sam Malinski’s shot at the blue line and redirected the puck past Sorokin to give the Avalanche the lead.

After trailing 1-0 in the opening 20 minutes, the Avalanche went from trailing 0-1 to leading 1-2 in just 5 minutes and 51 seconds of the second quarter. Wedgewood set an example for Colorado by making ten saves multiple times in the second period. He kept the Avalanche in the game and ensured they maintained the lead heading into the second intermission. Although the Islanders trailed 12-10, the Avalanche led 2-1 after the second quarter.

The game still seemed to be 2-1 in the third period, with both Wedgwood and Sorokin making save after save. After extinguishing the fourth penalty kick, the Avalanche made it 3-1 on Martin Necas’ empty-net goal with 35 seconds left. His 13th game of the season put the game out of reach in a big way. Then, with 15 seconds left, Brent Burns’ shot from the blue line near the bench went past Sorokin to really put the game out of reach, making it 4-1.

Wedgewood’s 28 saves helped the Avalanche extend their winning streak to six games, and the team has now scored in 10 straight games. They have a record of 13 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses this season and their next game is Thursday, November 20th against the New York Rangers. As for the Islanders, their winning streak was ended and their record this season is 10 wins, 7 draws and 2 losses. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18 against the Dallas Stars.
