Wheelchair Tennis Masters: Alfie Hewitt loses to Tokihito Oda in men’s singles final

In the men’s singles final of the Wheelchair Masters, British player Alfie Hewitt was defeated by Japan’s world number one Tokito Oda.

The 27-year-old three-time former champion Hewitt, playing in his sixth Masters singles final, stayed on the court for more than an hour to help teenage star Xiao Tian win 6-1 6-1 in Huzhou, China.

The 19-year-old defending champion continued his recent dominance against the world number two when he defeated Hewitt’s doubles partner Gordon Reid in last season’s final.

He achieved his 13th victory in 22 games with Hewitt and defeated Hewitt in the French Open and Wimbledon men’s singles finals this season.

Hewitt defeated Oda in the Australian Open final in January, a pair of finals in which the Briton claimed his 10th Grand Slam singles title.

Hewitt also finished runner-up in the men’s doubles final at Lake State, but lost to Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spagaren in the deciding set of Saturday’s final, along with Reed.
