Twins hire Mark Holberg as bench coach

The Twins finalize their 2026 coaching staff. Most of the moves have been reported before, but Minnesota revealed the hiring of Mark Hallberg as bench coach. They also added Mike Rabelo as backup assistant coach and Toby Gardenhire as on-field coordinator.

Others on Derek Shelton’s first staff at Minnesota are already known: pitching coach Pete Markey, hitting coach Keith Beauregard, bullpen coach LaTroy Hawkins, base coaches Grady Sizemore and Ramon Borrego, assistant pitching coach Luis Ramirez and assistant hitting coaches Redon Serra and Trevor Amicon. Rocco Baldelli has five holdovers on his staff.

Hallberg, 39, heads to the Twins after eight seasons with the Giants. He coached and managed in the minor league system for several years before joining the MLB staff in 2020. Hallberg served as base coach in San Francisco for the past four seasons and interviewed for their managerial openings during the 2023-24 offseason. (The position went to Bob Melvin.) Hallberg coincidentally takes over the position held by Jace Tingler for the past four seasons. Tingler left the Twins to join Tony Vitlow’s first staff in San Francisco.

Rabello served on the Buccaneers coaching staff from 2020-25. Shelton spent most of his time as Pittsburgh’s manager. The 45-year-old spent three years as a part-time catcher in the major leagues. He also coached with Detroit and most recently served as Pittsburgh’s third base coach.

As one might deduce, Gardenhire is the son of longtime Minnesota captain Ron Gardenhire. Toby, 43, spent a brief minor league career with the organization and has been managing in their farm system since 2018. He has led their 3A affiliate in St. Paul for the past five seasons. Now, he’s received his first All-City promotion, joining the MLB staff.
