Magic’s Desmond Bane makes first career buzzer-beater

Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane hit his first career buzzer-beater in Monday night’s 115-112 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers after missing all five of his three-point attempts.

Desmond Bane ruins Trail Blazers’ final rally

Bane was shooting just 26 percent from 3-point range this season when he hit his first career game-winner over the outstretched arm of Toumani Camara inside Kia Center.

Orlando led by nine with 2:32 left, and Portland went on an 11-0 run to take a 112-110 lead with 10.6 seconds left after Jerami Grant tipped in an alley-oop after being fouled by Paolo Banchero.

Banchero responded with a layup while being fouled, tying the score at 112 with 5 seconds left. However, Banchero missed his third consecutive free throw.

On the next possession, Jrue Holiday broke through with the ball, but threw the ball to Banchero, who called a timeout. Franz Wagner’s inbounds pass with 1.9 seconds left was looking for Banchero, but the Trail Blazers blocked the Magic star.

Bane then used a Wendell Carter Jr. screen to escape Holiday’s defense, then caught an inside pass, dribbled and drained a fadeaway clutch three-pointer to win the game.

Bane makes Magic history with game-winning shot

According to Basketball Reference, Bane became the fourth player in Magic history to hit a game-winning three-pointer, joining Cole Anthony (2021), Jameer Nelson (2011) and Hedo Turkoglu (2008).

“That was probably the best game-winning shot I’ve ever seen at Kia Center,” Banchero said. Banchero scored 28 points on 10-for-18 shooting (55.6%) and hit two three-pointers to become Orlando’s top scorer.

“It’s definitely exciting, especially for me, him saving my ass like that. I don’t want it to be that exciting. He’s a great player. He hung in there the whole game. Coach [Jamahl Mosley] Developed a great script, gave us options, found Desmond, and he knocked it down. “

Meanwhile, Bane had 22 points and a team-high seven assists in 33 minutes. He made 9 of 19 shots (47.4%) and just 1 of 6 (16.6%) from beyond the arc.

“I just wanted to be a part of the win,” Bane said in his post-game interview. “But I think moments like tonight really help you adjust to new situations.”

Orlando wins without Jalen Suggs

When Bane took a shot in front of the Trail Blazers bench, his teammates rushed the court. Banchero lifted Bane up, and players swarmed toward the 6-foot-5 guard on the floor.

Orlando also secured the victory without point guard Jalen Suggs, who missed the second night of a back-to-back as he continues to recover from knee surgery in March.

The Magic acquired Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies during the offseason in exchange for four unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

However, despite high expectations, Orlando started the season with a 1-4 record and many began to question the deal. Bane came into the game on Monday averaging just 14.2 points and shooting a career-worst 29.3 percent from three.

The Magic visit the New York Knicks on Wednesday.
