Oilers beat Blue Jackets 5-4 in overtime – Hockey Writer – Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night (Nov. 10) in a two-short homestand at Rogers Place. This is the first meeting of the season for both teams as they are both playing .500 hockey and looking to make progress in their young seasons.

The Blue Jackets started the season with a 7-7-0 record. They suffered a three-game losing streak and were last in the strong Metropolitan Division.
The Oilers started the season 6-6-4. They are also intent on overturning a three-game losing streak and staying in seventh place in the Pacific Division.

Two minutes into the game, sparks flew as Trent Frederic and Mathieu Olivier dropped the gloves and traded blows. The first stage is the physical stage. The Blue Jackets struck first, with Ivan Provorov looking to score his third goal of the season. Edmonton responded late in the game when Jake Walman hit a fadeaway shot from the point to tie the game. At the first intermission, the game was tied with the Oilers leading 7-4.
The second quarter started quickly, with Columbus on the board in just 1:39. Sean Monahan grabbed a rebound to give his team the lead. Much of this period was quiet, and Edmonton was besieged on several occasions. The Blue Jackets struck again with a few minutes left, and a nice tip-in by Boone Jenner made it 3-1 on their second break. They also led 15-12.
The final quarter started just as quickly as the second, but this time it was the Oilers. Connor McDavid got around the defense and fired a backhand far past Jet Greaves to close the gap. Shortly after, McDavid headed to the paint with Zach Aston-Reese. On the next four-on-four stretch, Columbus restored its two-goal lead on a goal from Adam Fantilli.

The Oilers struck again with just over six minutes left in the game. It was McDavid again who made a mad dash to the net and quickly broke past Greaves. Finally, with 57.9 seconds left, Wollman got a generous tip that allowed the Oilers to claw their way back and force overtime. The game entered overtime, and the two sides tied at 4-4, with Edmonton leading 22-18.
Overtime took almost no time. The Oilers rode the momentum and Jack Roslovic ate Walman feed all over the ice to finally seal the deal. The final score was 5-4 Edmonton, with a shooting percentage of 24-19.
There were some great performers on the ice tonight in this crazy game. Jenner and Fantilli each scored two points to lead the Blue Jackets. As for the winning Oilers, Wollman had two goals and an assist, McDavid had two goals, and Roslovic also had the game-winner and an assist.
The Blue Jackets’ next game is tomorrow night (Nov. 11) as they wrap up a five-game road trip. They will face the Seattle Kraken at Climate Commitment Arena, with puck drop at 8 pm BST.
The Oilers next game will be on the road against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night (Nov. 12) at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PDT. That begins a seven-game road trip for Edmonton, which includes a visit to Columbus on Thursday night (Nov. 13). Puck will also drop at 5:30 PM MDT.
