Jannik Sinner made a confident start to Nitto’s ATP Finals title defense on Monday night as the home favorites overcame an injured Felix Auger-Aliassime for a 7-5, 6-1 opening win in Turin.

Sinner’s victory, which took 1 hour and 41 minutes, increased the lead in the Bjorn Borg group to 1-0. The 24-year-old is currently on a 27-match winning streak indoors and has not dropped a set at the Nitto ATP Finals since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2023 final.

“It was a very tough match until 6-5. I had some chances to break serve. He served very well and only once I missed the return, but that can happen. He played some very aggressive tennis, so I’m happy to have overcome a very tough test today. Obviously winning the first game is very important in this match and this format. I’m happy.

“I hope it’s not too serious. I obviously hope he recovers quickly and that he’s back to 100 per cent.”

With victory at the Inalpi Arena on Monday night, Sinner also preserved his chance to defeat Carlos Alcaraz for the year-end ATP No. 1 ranking presented by the PIF. The Italian, 1,050 points behind his rival in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, began his Nitto ATP Finals campaign with a victory over Alex de Minaur on Sunday afternoon.

Eight days ago, Sinner and Auger-Aliassime played a tough first set in a rematch of the Rolex Paris Masters Championship. The Canadian struggled to defend two break points at 3-2 and resolve the set point at 5-4, but he was unable to prevent Sinner’s decisive break in the 12th game, and his left leg seemed to start to hurt after serving 0/30.

Auger-Aliassime received an off-court medical timeout at the end of the first set and despite a brave performance in his first Nitto ATP Finals since 2022, the PIF ATP Ranking No. 8 was unable to recover from a dropped serve in the second game of the second set. He also received treatment for his leg on the field during the 0-3 game, when he told a physical therapist that he was experiencing pain in his left calf, and received treatment again during the 1-4 game.

Sinner struck the ball cleanly throughout the game in his trademark fashion and remained focused throughout Auger-Aliassime’s physical struggles at the net. The second seed finished the match without facing a break point and won 89% (32/36) of his points after his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Statistics. The Italian leads the Lexus ATP head-to-head series 4-2 following wins over Auger-Aliassime in November in Paris and Turin.

“You still have to be very consistent and have good balance on the court,” Sinner said when asked about facing an opponent who’s out of shape. “Especially mentally, it’s a little different, but it’s an advantage at the same time. You have to say that. You have to use it the right way, even if you don’t want it to be like this.”
