Julian McKenzie: “CJ, I’ll go ahead and say it. Starting with the Buckeyes, you knew these questions about trades were going to happen. Do you think there might be some early-season trades this year, or do we have to wait until closer to the trade deadline? We just want these trades, CJ.

Johnston: “Yeah, I don’t know what’s going to happen. You know, I feel like there’s more discussion around the league, ultimately, I’d call it a week or ten days. You know, that doesn’t always produce results, but, you know, you at least need teams that feel like they have needs and teams that feel like they have players that they might want to move. Generally speaking, you need to have those discussions to stimulate the trade market.

NHL Rumors: Brayden Schenn speculation only increases

You know, in this case, you did have a deal with Vancouver for (Lucas) Reichel, and the Canucks felt like they had to get a live body, forward there to help their team. So some of that is coming.

But, I mean, I do think November is going to include a lot more action. But I have no reason to think we’re going to see a bunch of fireworks right now.

You know, we still have that. The UFA market has become increasingly soft since our last show. I know we’re going to be looking at this, I mean, Jacob Markstrom, you know, as I just mentioned, was on that show, but officially signed his two-year deal over the weekend for $6 million per season, there’s another goalie on the market.

I mean, trades have to be a way for the team to fix a problem or get better. I mean, I know we’re a long way from 2026 free agency, but the fact remains, there’s not a lot out there. So I hope this will stimulate some trade activity.

You know, trades that are typically made during the season are to address a current problem, whether it’s for a team trying to strengthen or fill a roster need or whatever. But that’s a long way of saying it, and if we were, the dam would burst soon, which isn’t too optimistic.

NHL Rumors: Will the Ottawa Senators take any action? It’s been a weird year for trading

But sometimes all it takes is one thing to happen for a ripple effect to occur. So you know, we do know that American Thanksgiving seems to be this mythical day on the NHL calendar, and we’re getting closer to that day.
