Sharks Edge Jets 2-1 in tight battle at SAP Center – The Hockey Writers – San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 on Friday night at the SAP Center, earning a statement victory behind strong goaltending from Alex Nedelkovic and timely goals from MacLean Celebrini and Will Smith. Although the Jets controlled the tempo for much of the game, their inability to convert possession into offensive results handed California a frustrating loss.
game review
The opening period was dynamic and back-and-forth, but the Jets established control early. Their dominance in the faceoff circle limited San Jose’s ability to build momentum, and that pressure paid off midway through the game. At 12 minutes and 34 seconds, Josh Morrissey finished the ball cleanly after winning the tie and fired a shot through traffic to beat Nedeljkovic to score the first goal.

This was the kind of goal the Jets have been looking for – a clean, quick hit off the faceoff that reflects their aggressive puck movement. Morrissey has shown confidence in recent games and his goal set the tone for the team’s start.
However, the Sharks responded quickly. Just over a minute later, the 19-year-old Celebrini passed the neutral zone, broke through the Jets defense, and hit a backhand shot past Connor Helleback to tie the game at 1-1. His composure and final strike were on full display, bringing the SAP Center fans to their feet and leaning firmly toward San Jose.
At the end of this quarter, the two sides were tied at 1-1. Both sides created excellent opportunities, but neither achieved obvious control. Winnipeg held a slim 12-8 lead in field goals.
If the first quarter was about offense, then the second quarter was about goalkeeping. Hellebaek and Nedelkovic both stepped up and made key saves to keep the game balanced. The Jets dominated possession – especially in the middle 10 minutes – but the Sharks defense performed well, deflecting several dangerous shots from Kyle Connor and Gabriel Vilardi.
Hellebuyck was equally sharp at the other end, blocking Filip Kurashev’s rebound attempt and showing Celebrini his glove midway through the game. The Jets were unable to find a breakthrough and trailed 10-9, but both goaltenders held their own. The second period ended the same way it started – tied at 1-1.
Both teams stepped up defensively in the third quarter, but the Sharks found the game’s defining moment late on. At 15:39, Smith saw a loose puck behind Helleback at the crease and backhanded it in to take the lead and make it 2-1 late in the third period.
Since then, a crackdown has begun in San Jose. The Jets fell behind and brought on Hellebuyck for the extra attacker with less than two minutes remaining, but Nedelkovic continued his great night — finishing with 32 saves on 33 shots. Hellebuyck stopped 25 of 27 games but didn’t get the run support he needed.
Looking to the future
This loss will be painful for the Jets. They controlled most of the game, winning 62.5% of their faceoffs and generating strong possession, but were unable to find a second goal. The Sharks, meanwhile, will take a lot of positives from this tournament – a disciplined defense, key goaltending and the performance of their young stars.
