Scotty Cameron enters the low-torque market with new OC neck option

As “zero” and low-torque putter options begin to flood the market, one major player remains silent, observing the growing trend.

But on Tuesday, Scotty Cameron finally entered the realm of low-torque putters with the launch of its new OC (short for Onset Center) putter. The OC neck design was released as an option on two head styles in the Studio Style and Phantom series: Fastback OC and Phantom 11R OC.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen more and more golfers look to putter settings to minimize the feeling of clubface spin at impact,” Austie Rollinson, Scotty Cameron’s senior director of putter development, said in a release. “As a designer, what excites me most about the OC is the options it offers golfers. We now have a whole new configuration for golfers who want the feel of a square, straight-back through path.

“We designed the OC model to minimize facial rotation while maintaining responsiveness and feedback.”

What is the Scotty Cameron OC Putter?

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Scotty Cameron was one of the last major putter manufacturers to enter the low-torque putter market, more than a year after competitors like Bettinardi, Toulon Golf, and Odyssey.

“The way the Cameron brand works, they don’t want to rush it,” Andrew Thomas, senior marketing manager at Cameron, told GOLF. “They want to be thoughtful and methodical about specific techniques in putting.

“I think Scotty himself wants to look at this and see if this becomes a fad? Does it really matter? As we’ve seen over the last year or so, it does matter.”

For Cameron, the new OC models are not a new line of putters, but rather an extension of the existing Studio Style and Phantom lines of tow and neck products.

When Rawlinson began hearing feedback from tour players about low-torque designs, Rawlinson kept hearing that low-torque (often called “zero-torque”) putters often meant sacrificing feel. Because of this, Cameron’s OC design clearly prioritizes feel and maintains a traditional setup.

both Fastback overclocking and Phantom 11R OC Unlike its base model, the putter features a center-axis design that places the axis directly through the center of gravity of the club head. But they’re also 15 grams heavier and have slightly stiffer shafts, designed to match the increase in weight without reducing feel.

In order to maintain a more traditional look and setup, the putters only have one degree of shaft tilt, allowing them to be used with traditional grips.

Unlike other low-torque options on the market, Onset Center putters do not have the shaft inserted directly into the clubhead, which means shaft tilt and shaft tilt (and therefore loft) can be adjusted. Cameron said any adjustments will not affect the low-torque characteristics of the pushrods.

The pushrods feature Cameron’s new link milling pattern, a key feature on all of Cameron’s recent releases, while the Fastback models feature new Studio carbon steel inserts, a material that Cameron says is one of the softest he’s ever used.

The Phantom 11R’s shape also has more rounded edges than the current Phantom 11 putter, similar to Cameron Young’s Phantom 9.5R putter.

Who is the Scotty Cameron OC putter suitable for?

Thomas firmly believes that the new OC options and low-torque putters in general are not a panacea and are not suitable for every golfer.

But for players with a more naturally square-to-field shot, the new OC putter option will complement that nicely.

The Cameron low-torque model, with its heavier head weight, link milling, and SCS blade on the fastback option, is definitely for players who prefer a softer feel.

My thoughts!

It was only a matter of time before Scotty entered the low-torque chat, and entry is exactly what we expected.

Going forward, you may start to see many OEMs distance themselves from the “zero torque” terminology, like Cameron is doing here, because these pushrods are not actually zero torque. It’s nice to see OEMs admit this when launching new products. Cameron specifically said they understood that once a human hand is on the putter, a certain amount of torque is generated.

OC’s statement is that these two models are now the lowest torque offerings from Scotty Cameron and have the greatest ability to keep the putter head square during delivery.

In terms of feel, these putters definitely live up to their Scotty Cameron reputation. I haven’t decided yet on whether to go completely with the low-torque system, but I’ve been trying out the Fastback OC. I find it has a very similar feel to my Studio Style Catalina, which has always been a go-to player for me.

Scotty Cameron 2025 Phantom 11R OC Custom Putter

The Scotty Cameron OC putter will be available in golf stores starting November 14th. Both models are priced at $549.

The putter is available in 33-, 34- and 35-inch lengths with a loft of 3.5° and a lie angle of 70°. Loft and lie angles are adjustable ± 2°.
