Sunday afternoon saw the Utah Mammoths wrap up a four-game road trip with a quick stop at home to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Delta Center before embarking on another four-game road trip.
It’s the first of three road games for the Chargers, who enter Sunday’s game riding a four-game winning streak.
game review
After losing their seventh straight game to the Edmonton Oilers, the Mammoths regained their morale and scored their first goal five minutes into the game. It was Lawson Crouse’s second of the season when he got behind the Chargers defense on a nifty breakaway pass from Ian Cole.
Ten minutes later, Yanni Gourde responded for the Lightning with his third of the season, completing a couple of incredible passes to set up a backdoor tap-in for the Lightning.
After 20 minutes, which were the only two goals scored, the two teams entered the first break of the tie. However, they took their first lead of the game two minutes into the second period when Anthony Cirelli fired a one-time goal from the top of the left circle for his seventh game of the season.
The Lightning went into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead. Although there were a few scrums at the end of the first half, both teams performed well in the midfield and defended very well, creating only two high-danger chances in total.
The Mammoths capitalized on an early opportunity in the third period when Kailer Yamamoto tied the game and scored his first goal of the season on another great pass from Cole with just over two minutes to go.
The Lightning took the lead at right back with seven minutes remaining when Jake Guentzel burst out from behind the net and fired a short shot over the shoulder of Karel Vejmelka.
Guentzel’s fifth goal of the season set up Brandon Hagel’s empty-net goal with 15 seconds left to give the Lightning a 4-2 win.
After this loss, the Mammoths head to the East, with their first stop being the Buffalo Sabers on Tuesday, while the Chargers have won five in a row and will look to make it six in a night on the road against the Colorado Avalanche.
