The New Jersey Devils solidified their presence in the near future, announcing Friday that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with goaltender Jacob Markstrom with an average annual value of $6 million.
Markstrom
The 35-year-old netminder was acquired from the Calgary Flames in June 2024 and brings new stability and confidence to New Jersey. Since his arrival, Markstrom has infused veteran composure and reliability to a position the Devils have long questioned. His presence not only improves the team’s defensive structure, but also instills trust in the entire locker room, providing the Devils with the anchor of stability they have been looking for in recent seasons.

In his first season in New Jersey, Markstrom had a strong and consistent performance with a .900 save percentage, four shutouts, and a 2.50 goals against average. Beyond the stat sheet, his consistency and composure in high-pressure moments will be crucial for the Devils, especially in crucial conference games. His reliability allows the Devils’ young defensive core to play with more freedom and confidence, knowing their goalie can handle the pressure when called upon.
Markstrom’s Road to New Jersey
Markstrom was originally selected by the Florida Panthers with the 31st overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut three years later against the Devils at Prudential Center. After spending his early years as a developing backup, he had a breakout season with the Vancouver Canucks in 2017-18, cementing himself as the starting goaltender and posting a 28-23-9 record. Over his 14-year NHL career, Markstrom has built a reputation as a durable and proven netminder, compiling a record of 243-214-63 with 21 shutouts while playing in Florida, Vancouver, Calgary and now New Jersey.
With the extension, the Devils gain experience and goal-scoring consistency, which are necessary ingredients for this team. Markstrom’s veteran leadership and past performance will remain an important part of the Devils’ success as the team continues to develop around a young, dynamic core.
