Sharks defeat Devils 5-2 for first home win of season – Hockey Writer – New Jersey Devils

The San Jose Sharks take on the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, October 30 at SAP Center for their second game of the season. The Devils are looking for redemption after their eight-game winning streak ended, while the Sharks are looking to bounce back from Tuesday night’s 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. West Coast late night showdown, Sharks won 5-2.

The Sharks scored first just 42 seconds into the game when William Eklund scored on an assist from Philipp Kurashev. The Devils were called for too many men on the ice at 7:26, but the Sharks’ strong play didn’t last long as Will Smith tripped Jesper Bratt as he sprinted into the lane. However, neither team was able to take full advantage of their respective personnel advantages, or the resulting 4-on-4.

The Sharks extended their lead to 2-0 on Filip Kurashev’s goal midway through the first quarter. Their third goal came just three minutes later, when Alex Weinberg deflected the puck into the net.

The Devils’ power play began to take effect late in the first half when Dmitry Orlov received a penalty for elbowing Ondrej Pratt. Dawson Mercer finally put the Devils on the board with a goal past Alex Nedeljkovic off a redirect from Jack Hughes.

The Sharks’ momentum remained firmly in their favor throughout the second quarter. Smith scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from MacLean Celebrini to give San Jose a three-goal lead. Then Orlov scored a goal in the final period and the Sharks led 5-1.

The Devils once again took advantage when Eklund received a holding penalty at the start of the third quarter. Mercer redirected Dougie Hamilton’s initial shot for his second goal of the night.

In the end, the Sharks won 5-2, which was also their first home victory of the season. Jake Allen stopped 23 of 28 shots, but Nedeljkovic had a .935 save percentage (SV%).

Looking to the future

The Sharks continue a four-game homestand against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday afternoon. The Devils will have another late-night road game against the Kings on Saturday.
