Blue Jackets beat Maple Leafs on night John Tavares scores 500th goal – Hockey Writer – Columbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs both played early Tuesday amid hockey fever. As the only game in the NHL, they were the main attraction Wednesday night. The Azzurri did not disappoint.

One night after the Blue Jackets’ fourth line helped them to a victory in Buffalo, it was the third line’s turn to do the heavy lifting. Cole Sillinger, Charlie Coyle and Mathieu Olivier combined to post 3-8-11 numbers as the Blue Jackets defeated the Maple Leafs 6-3.

The Blue Jackets’ dominance eclipses some of John Tavares’ NHL history.

While both the Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs had to deal with back-to-back games, the home team took an early lead. The game started with a 1-0 lead.

Silinger’s shot scored his first goal of the season. He received a pass from Coyle and beat defender Simone Benoit into the net. Backhand turned forehand, Silinger beat Kayden Primo to open the scoring.

Just over four minutes later, Coyle was at it again. This time, Olivier knocked Matias Marcelli to the ice. Coyle passed the puck to Zach Wilensky, who led the team on a “Flying V” and “5-on-1” rush. Wellenski’s third goal of the season helped the team rewrite the score to 2-0.

The Maple Leafs took the lead early in the second period with a goal from Sammy Blais. He made his Maple Leafs debut with William Nylander injured. Bryce knocked the puck out of the air past Elvis Merzlikins.

The Blue Jackets dominated throughout the night. Ivan Provorov, Silinger scored again, and Dante Fabbro turned a 2-1 score into a 5-1 score in just eight minutes.

In the third quarter, Olivier scored his fourth point of the night, extending the lead to 6-1. Coyle added his fourth assist of the game. The goal prompted some Maple Leafs fans to throw their jerseys onto the ice in Columbus, where officials quickly picked them up.

Then NHL history was made. With 4 minutes and 15 seconds left in the game, Tavares became the 49th player in NHL history to reach 500 career goals. He completed a pass from Matthew Nice. There wasn’t much celebration given the score. But when the results were announced, there was some applause.

Nick Robertson made it 6-3 with 1:50 left to advance to the finals. Merzlikins finished with 33 saves on the night. Primeau, meanwhile, has played in just 18 of 24 games. Steven Lorentz had to leave the game late in the second quarter with an upper-body injury and was unable to return.

The Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs will both have Thursday off. The Blue Jackets will face the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, while the Maple Leafs will travel to Philadelphia to face the Flyers on Saturday night.
