Nationals interview Chad Epperson in front office hiring

The Nationals have interviewed Red Sox Double-A manager Chad Epperson as part of their managerial search, Spencer Nussbaum of The Washington Post reports. He joins Brandon Hyde as the only known interviewees.

The Washington Post’s Andrew Golden wrote this afternoon that the Nationals have informed interim coach Miguel Cairo that he is no longer in the running. Golden reported that the Nationals are interested in talking to former Twins captain Rocco Baldelli and Dodgers bench coach Danny Lehmann, but it’s unclear if they have officially been interviewed.

Washington’s new president of baseball operations, Paul Toboni, previously served as the Red Sox’s assistant general manager. He’s familiar with Epperson and clearly values his work with the Boston organization. Epperson, 53, has been with the Red Sox for more than 20 years. In 2004, he landed his first affiliate management position at Low-A.

Epperson spent six seasons in A-ball before becoming the organization’s minor league catching coordinator. He stayed in this position for 12 years before returning to the dugout. Epperson has led the Red Sox to Double-A in Portland the past four seasons. He also spent the 2024-25 offseason as a quality control coach for the Toros East in the Dominican Winter League.
