Scotty Cameron’s latest limited edition offers Tour-inspired design

Just mention the Scotty Cameron Tour prototype and you’ll catch the attention of hordes of golf gear junkies everywhere.
That’s why Titleist is catering to gear enthusiasts with the introduction of Scotty Cameron’s new Studio Xperimental Limited putter.
The Studio Xperimental Limited version offers new versions of the Squareback and Fastback shapes in the Studio Style range, with some Tour-inspired modifications including a steel gray finish and a plumber’s neck Fastback.
“Studio Xperimental is all about sharing something special with players: prototype-inspired setups designed for those who demand performance and technology with a clean, tour-proven look,” founder Scotty Cameron said in a press release. “With the series’ multi-material design, chain face milling, unique alignment features and custom grips and shafts, every element of Studio Xperimental is designed to inspire confidence—from setup to shot.”
Read on below to learn more about the Studio Xperimental Limited putter line and my thoughts on the new releases.
What is Studio Xperimental Ltd?
The name Xperimental is nothing new to Scotty Cameron fans. The name is often used for tour-only prototypes designed for the world’s best players, but some of these putters are retailing either as limited releases or as one-off pieces for the Scotty Cameron Gallery.

With the new Studio Xperimental Limited, Cameron is giving consumers the opportunity to try new hammer shapes in the Studio Style line, some of which have become popular on the PGA Tour.
Both putters feature an I-beam neck, Tour-preferred steel gray PVD finish, a custom black graphite shaft and a parallel sightline on the topline. The Fastback is called the Fastback 2, a nod to its neck style, and is the first time a putter with a plumber’s neck is available to the public. The current Studio Style range only comes in Fastback (single bend) and Fastback 1.5 (I-beam nozzle neck).
Graphite shafts are also rare for a Scotty Cameron retail version, even a limited edition. In fact, the Cameron version features a graphite shaft for the first time since the 1993-94 Masters Choice Classic 1 Limited Run.

The limited edition putter also features the same Studio carbon steel face insert and link face milling technology as the Studio Style version, but this putter is finished in black nickel plating to match the steel gray PVD finish.
Who are Studio Xperimental putters suitable for?
Scotty Cameron fans and gearheads of all kinds will love this version. However, the new Studio Xperimental putter will cater to a few specific golfers.
Players who prefer dark finish putters, such as the recently released Phantom Black putter or the 2012-2013 Select Series, will appreciate the softer, less reflective hue of Steel Gray PVD. Darker finishes are a common request on Tour.

But the most popular might be the Fastback 2, as the Fastback shape hasn’t yet been introduced to fit around a plumber’s neck. The Fastback has a rounder head, which suits the eyes of gamers who like softer lines, while the Squareback (as the name suggests) is more angular.
my thoughts
The new Fastback and Squareback designs have proven to be extremely popular both on tour and in the retail market, so it’s no surprise that Cameron has made some new options available to consumers in the form of limited releases.

Personally, I’ve always been attracted to dark finished putters, and the horizontal two-tone alignment aids of the standard Studio Style version aren’t exactly what I need, so it’s nice to see mostly single-color versions of these new shapes. Interestingly, Cameron does offer a flipped version of the retail putter on Tour – a black putter with a silver alignment aid, so it’s worth noting that they opted for a solid-color version.

Scotty Cameron Next year’s product features are usually teased out in end-of-season releases – like they did with Phantom Black – and the Studio Style range might get some expand. Will this include Fastback 2? It looks like it will be a while before we know.
It’s clear that Cameron is fully embracing the SCS insert and link milling model. Link milling has been part of every product released by Scotty Cameron this year.
