The Penguins came out of the gate with a perfect start. Bryan Rust and Anthony Mantha each scored a point just 55 seconds into the game, giving the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Despite falling behind by two points early, the Blues found opportunities to get back into the game. After overwhelming the Penguins in transition play, the Blues scored two goals of their own. Nick Bjugstad cut the deficit in half with his second goal of the season at 4:15. Jordan Kyrou extended his winning streak to seven games to make it 2-2 with less than five minutes remaining.

After a delayed penalty kick by the Blues, the Penguins regained the lead on Parker Wotherspoon’s first Penguins goal at 6:37 of the second period. On their second power play of the game, the Blues showed quick puck movement to create a chance. Despite this, they couldn’t find any offensive opportunities and still trailed 3-2 with less than six minutes left in the game. In the final minutes of the second half, the two teams defended tightly, and the Penguins took a 3-2 lead into the deciding game.
