Opening Game: World Series, Orioles, manager/general manager search

Here are three things we’ll be looking at today in the world of baseball:

1. World Series Heading to Los Angeles:

The World Series departed from Toronto yesterday and all hell broke loose after the right-hander played a dominant game all game Yoshinobu Yamamotonow both teams have arrived in Los Angeles for Game 3. Dodgers have right-handers on mound Tyler Glasnow (3.19), while the Blue Jays will counter with veteran right wing Max Scherzer (5.19 ERA). The future Hall of Famer had a rough year, but he did strike out five in 5 2/3 innings while allowing two runs in his first start in ALCS Game 4 against Seattle. Glasnow, meanwhile, threw 1 2/3 scoreless runs in Game 1 of the NLDS and then threw 6 scoreless runs in Game 4 of the series. He allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings against the Brewers. Tonight’s game is scheduled for 5 pm local time in Los Angeles.

2. The Orioles have their manager:

It was reported last night that the Orioles are finalizing a deal to make the Guardians assistant manager the new manager in Baltimore. Albernaz, who celebrates his 43rd birthday later this week, was promoted to assistant manager under Stephen Vogt this year after serving as a bench coach in Cleveland. He previously worked on the Giants’ major league coaching staff and in the minor leagues as the Rays’ manager.

Now he’s ready to get his first major league opportunity, news that moves a highly coveted candidate off the boards of other organizations. It also creates a hole that needs to be filled on the Guardians’ coaching staff and a level of curiosity as to whether the Orioles will retain Tony Mansolino as part of the staff under Albernaz. Mansolino served as the club’s third base coach for several years before being promoted to interim head coach for much of the 2025 season.

3. Management and general manager vacancies yet to be filled:

While Albernaz’s hiring removes another executive position from the board, there’s still a lot of recruiting to do this winter. The Twins are understood to have four finalists for the manager’s job, while the Rockies have at least two finalists in their search for the team’s next director of baseball operations. It is understood the Padres conducted a number of interviews that included one of the future Hall of Famers, Albert Pujols. The Nationals interviewed former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, and Atlanta and Colorado also have managerial openings. Which team will chart a course for its future with a key hire next?
