Sherwood’s 2 goals led the Canucks to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Oilers – The Hockey Writers – Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks host the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night at Rogers Arena in the second half of a back-to-back between the two teams. The Canucks lost to the Montreal Canadiens 4-3, while the Oilers lost to the Kraken 3-2.

The Canucks had another strong performance from Kiefer Sherwood, who scored twice, including the overtime winner, to beat the Oilers 4-3. They also got big help from Elias Pettersson, who scored for the second straight night, and Brock Boeser led the way with three points (one goal, two assists). The Oilers fought back with two goals from Leon Draisaitl and Jake Roslovic, their first with their new team, to tie the game at 3-1 and send it into overtime. This is your game review.

The first period was a back-and-forth track game with both Calvin Pickard and Thatcher Demko having to make some solid saves. In a similar style of play, the Canucks scored first when Evander Kane beat Ty Emberson to the puck and set up Boeser for his fourth goal of the season. Boeser took a backhand pass from Kane and beat Pickard five-hole with a backhand shot of his own. The rest of the game was back-and-forth, with the Oilers beating the Canucks 13-8. The Oilers got their only strong play of the game, getting killed by the Canucks, while Sherwood and Jake DeBrusk also had a couple shorthanded chances.

The Canucks extended their lead to two points on their first power play of Game 2, thanks to Pettersson and his old one-timer. They then thought they had taken a 3-0 lead when Sherwood notched his fifth win of the season, but it was eventually disallowed on a coach’s challenge as Tyler Myers was offside. The score remained 2-0 until Draisaitl scored on a breakaway off a perfect pass from Evan Bouchard to pull the Oilers within one. But in the final minute of the period, Sherwood put the Canucks down two points with an absolutely beautiful goal, darting into the paint, dancing with veteran Mattias Ekholm and firing a wrist shot past Pickard on the far side. At the end of this quarter, the Canucks led 3-1, but still trailed 20-18 in the attack time.

For the second straight night, the Canucks held the lead heading into the third period and allowed their opponent to tie the game. But this time, they didn’t lose. The Oilers sent the game into overtime on goals from Roslovic and Draisaitl in the final frame, but Sherwood capped off a strong game with his second goal of the night early in overtime, sending fans home happy with a 4-3 victory. In the process, the Canucks snapped a three-game losing streak after losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Nashville Predators and Canadiens.

What’s next?

The Canucks will wrap up their three-game homestand on Tuesday when J.T. Miller and the New York Rangers visit, while the Oilers return to Edmonton that night to take on the red-hot Utah Mammoths.
