Tour pro nearly drives green, shoots 8 in Shot Tracker horror show

If you don’t count the short game on the par-4 14th hole at Black Desert Resort, PGA Tour pro Davis Thompson would have had a proud opening round Thursday at the 2025 Bank of Utah Championship.
But an unfilmed chip disaster on the 14th hole turned Thompson’s scorecard upside down and left golf fans scratching their heads over the hole’s strange Shot Tracker results.
This is what we know happened.
Davis Thompson shoots ugly 8 at Bank of Utah Championship
Most of Thompson’s first-round scorecards looked good. Three bogeys were offset by five birdies, leaving him at two under par. But that doesn’t take into account the horror show that took place on the 14th.
Starting on the back nine, Thompson made four steady pars on holes 10-13. Next up is the par-4 14th hole. The game is only 308 yards long, and most pros stand on the tee hoping for a birdie or better on the second-easiest hole on the course.
Thompson probably thought so too, especially when his tee shot landed just short left of the green. But four shots later, Thompson was barely moving his feet.
While there is no video of the incident, the PGA Tour’s shot tracker gives us a good idea of what happened. Although No. 14 is shorter, its green is higher and has a shaved edge, causing any short ball hit to roll off the front of the putting surface.
That seems to be what happened to Thompson.
Where things got worse Thursday was a pin location on the front left edge of the green. So the pro, who won the John Deere Classic last year, was left with a tricky chip with little room to work with.
Thompson’s second shot at 55 feet ended up just 6 feet from where it started, likely after rolling back from the front of the green, according to Shot Tracker. His third shot went another six feet.
But the disaster has just begun. His fourth shot, probably his third chip shot, ended up going 6 feet farther Stay away from the hole. The fifth shot appeared to come right back to his feet, advancing just 6 inches according to the shot tracker.
On his sixth shot, Thompson decided not to get close and hit the ball 26 feet beyond the hole. But at least he finally made the putt.
Two putts later, he had a quadruple-bogey 8.
A Tour Cast video rendering posted by @TheModelManiac on X.com shows Thompson’s struggles in the No. 14 in more detail.
While Snowman dealt a devastating blow to Thompson’s scorecard, he rallied on the second nine and made four straight birdies to finish the round with a two-over-par 73.
