Canadiens win in overtime, lose seven straight – The Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

The Calgary Flames tried and failed to snap a six-game losing streak Wednesday night against the Montreal Canadiens, who have won four of their past five games.

Expect this to be a tall order for the Flames considering the Canadiens are fifth in goals per game and the Flames are third in goals allowed per game.

The game got off to an interesting start, but was delayed 20 minutes due to a lighting malfunction at the Scotiabank Saddledome. When the puck finally dropped, the arena was still darker than usual.

The Canadiens opened the scoring on the power play after Rasmus Andersen was sent to the penalty box for a hook, and the lights eventually came up as the game wore on. Zach Bolduc scored the goal off a great pass from Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki.

It was the Canadiens’ second opportunity of the period to capitalize on a man advantage, with the goal with less than three minutes left in the first period giving the Canadiens a one-goal lead at halftime.

Throughout the second quarter, the Flames had three consecutive power play opportunities. However, they failed to succeed in all three areas, with Jakub Dobes stepping up to the plate, saving all 27 shots he faced in the first 40 minutes.

The Flames continued to press early in the third quarter and finally broke the deadlock after a horrific defensive zone turnover. Noah Dobson passed the ball to Morgan Frost, who passed it to Adam Klapka, who beat Dobbs cleanly for his first goal of the season.

Klapka’s goal with 14 minutes left sent the game into overtime, and the Canadiens prevailed in overtime, with Ivan Demidov circling the offensive zone for the game-winner a minute into overtime and eventually firing a beautiful cross-field pass to Mike Matheson.

The two teams will face off again on January 7, 2026, just after the New Year. Before then, the Flames play their second game of the season against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, while the Canadiens face the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow.
