NHL Rumors: Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks and Pete DeBoer

Big gap between Ottawa Senators and Sean Pinto
Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Citizen: Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto is in the final year of his contract, which has a cap hit of $3.75 million. Senators general manager Steve Staos has said multiple times that offseason contract extension talks with agent Lewis Gross were “positive.”
“Their teams have said they want the season to start without any disruption,” Staos told TSN’s Claire Hanna and Mark Dennis (last week). “We’re willing to talk to Sean. We think we want to make him part of this core group.
“He knows that. We know that too. And it’s important for us to watch him grow with the team.”
There is a wide gap between what the senators and Pinto camps consider to be fair market value, sources said. Insiders believe the Senators may be considering a long-term deal worth $5 to $5.5 million. One league executive said Pinto could be considered between Dylan Cozens’ $7.1 million and Tim Stutzle’s $8.35 million.

Vancouver Canucks considering all center options
TSN: The Vancouver Canucks are calling the team to find a center, preferably a No. 2, according to Darren Dreger.
To make matters more serious, they lost Filip Chytil for a long time at the weekend. Teddy Blueger is also out. You don’t need to go out and scour the market and find the second center. So Alvin is looking at all options, including a 3/4 depth player, maybe an NHL 5 depth player.
Pete DeBoer awaits another coaching opportunity
TSNDarren Dreger said it’s too early for a coach to get stuck in the hole, but Pete DeBoer could be ready if an opening opens up. He’s still getting paid by the Dallas Stars this year and is scouting for Team Canada because he’s an assistant to Joe Cooper.
There’s always drama for the Toronto Maple Leafs
“So now he does have something going on, and you’re right, James. When you look at Pete DeBoer’s resume, he can look for the best fit, he can cherry-pick, but that’s not his approach. He’s definitely looking at everything. It’s too early to put a coach on the line, but if there’s a coach in the near future, then he wants to be considered.”
