Larkin, Finney power Red Wings past Oilers 4-2 – Hockey Writer – Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings (5-1-0) host the Edmonton Oilers (2-3-1) on Sunday (October 19). Edmonton enters this game on a two-game losing streak, while Detroit enters this game on a four-game winning streak. The offense was sloppy in the first quarter, with Detroit generating most of the offense. The Red Wings had a 13-2 scoring chance advantage with six high-danger chances compared to Edmonton’s zero. Despite this, the game remained scoreless after the opening period, with the Red Wings holding a 7-3 shooting advantage.

The Red Wings opened the scoring 8:51 into the second quarter. Ben Chiarot found Dylan Larkin for a one-time goal and the captain made no mistake, firing a shot past goalkeeper Stuart Skinner. Then, after a successful penalty kick, Detroit made it 2-0 with Emmitt Finnie’s first NHL goal at 11:54 in the middle of the game.

Noah Philp tied the game for Edmonton less than a minute later when Vasily Podkolzin’s deflected shot went through the legs of goaltender John Gibson.

Larkin added another goal with 2:55 left, a shot from the right face-off circle that Skinner was looking to pull back to restore Detroit’s two-goal lead. The home team went into the second intermission with a 3-1 lead and a 17-11 shot advantage.

Entering the final frame, the Oilers cut their lead to 7:33. Brett Kulak’s cross-court pass found Leon Draisaitl, who one-timed the puck into the open cage. The game went without a buzzer for nearly 12 minutes until Detroit sealed the victory with an empty net goal on Finney’s second goal of the game.

Gibson stopped 16 of 18 shots in the win and had a save percentage (SV%) of 0.889, while Skinner stopped 21 of 24 shots in the loss and had a save percentage of .875 SV%.

The Oilers will conclude a five-game road trip against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday (Oct. 21). Meanwhile, the Red Wings will begin a mini-two-game road trip against the Buffalo Sabers on Wednesday (October 22).
