Rockets and Kevin Durant agree to 2-year, $90 million contract extension

Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant has signed a two-year, $90 million contract extension that includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, his business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Sunday.

Kevin Durant eligible for max contract extension

Kleiman said Durant was eligible for a contract extension of up to $120 million over two years, but chose to take $30 million less so the team could maintain “flexibility in team building.”

Durant, who turns 37 in September, currently holds the record for the highest career earnings in NBA history at $598.2 million, based on current and future salary, surpassing LeBron James ($583.9 million).

The future Hall of Famer will make $54.7 million in the 2025-26 season, the final season of a $194.21 million four-year contract he signed in 2021 as a member of the Brooklyn Nets.

Durant’s current contract is for a total of three years and is worth $144.7 million.

Rockets acquire Durant in historic seven-team trade

The Rockets acquired Durant in July as part of the largest trade in NBA history, a historic seven-team deal that sent Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, No. 10 pick Ka’aman Maruac and second-round picks Raheel Fleming and Kobe Breea to the Phoenix Suns.

Last season, Durant played 62 games with the Suns (all starts), averaging 36.5 minutes per game, scoring 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 0.8 steals, 1.2 blocks, shooting 52.7% from the field and 43% from three-point range.

The 15-time All-Star has averaged at least 25 points per game for three consecutive seasons while shooting 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range, the longest streak in NBA history, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

According to “Basketball Reference”, Durant also ranks eighth in NBA career points. If he scores at least 990 points, he can surpass Wilt Chamberlain and Dirk Nowitzki and enter the all-time scoring list this season.

Tari Eason is eligible for contract extension until October 21

Houston’s focus now is on re-signing Tari Eason, who is eligible to extend as a rookie until October 21.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported in August that if Durant re-signs for two years at his first-year salary of $57.4 million and Eason also re-signs as a rookie, the Rockets will become a second team on the tarmac in the 2026-27 season.

However, Durant’s new contract will bring his earnings to $45 million per season.

Last season, in 57 games (16 starts), Eason averaged 24.9 minutes per game, scoring a career-high 12 points, 1.5 assists, and 1.7 steals. His shooting percentage reached a career-high 48.7% and his three-point shooting percentage reached a career-high 34.2%.

The Rockets will open their 2025-26 season on October 21st against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
