Holger Ruhn becomes latest tennis player to end season prematurely due to injury

World No. 11 Holger Rune became the latest high-profile tennis player to end his season prematurely after suffering an injury at the Stockholm Nordic Open.
The 22-year-old Dane was on track to return to the top ten after reaching the semi-finals of the ATP 250 event, but was forced to withdraw a set ahead of France’s Ugo Humbert.
His mother Aneke Rooney later told Danish newspaper BT that medical staff told her her son’s injuries were “very serious”.
She said: “They were absolutely sure it was a torn Achilles tendon, so of course it was very bad. Of course, Holger was completely devastated.”
“They said they could see it with the naked eye.”
Rooney, who was nursing a hamstring problem ahead of the game, seemed to realize immediately the seriousness of his injury and became emotional as he limped into a chair for treatment.
He stopped painfully after jumping to hit the ball in the backcourt. Humbert’s serve tied the score at 40-40, with Rooney leading 6-4 2-2.
Humbert said: “This is not the way I wanted to win. I’m very disappointed with Holger and I wish him the best.
“I wish him a speedy recovery. It was a great game and he played a little better than me, but I really feel sorry for Holger.”
