Daniil Medvedev refuses to fade from the conversation at the Nitto ATP Finals, continuing his late-season surge with another strong performance at the Almaty Open this week.

The former PIF ATP No. 1 avoided some early danger on Friday to beat Fabian Maroussan 7-5, 6-2 to advance to his third straight ATP Tour semifinal. At 4-5 in the first set, Medvedev was forced to save three set points in the service game, but he quickly found his space to play, hitting 27 winning points and only making 12 unforced errors, which was an outstanding performance.

“The first set was very difficult, I had to save three set points,” Medvedev said. “But I’m very happy with the way I played, especially after this moment, and I’m happy that I was able to win. I served really well today and I managed to improve my game when I needed to, so I hope I can continue to play like that.”

Medvedev, the winner of the 2020 season finals, moved up two spots to 13th at the PIF ATP Turin Live event. Since October 20, he has strengthened his hopes of participating in a seventh consecutive Nitto ATP Finals.

After the semi-finals in Beijing and Shanghai, Medvedev awaits a semi-final match against qualifier James Duckworth in Almaty. The Australian earlier beat third seed Flavio Coboli 6-3, 6-2 to become the second player to reach the semi-finals multiple times at the event, having reached the final in 2021.

Back in August, after a disappointing start to the season, Medvedev admitted he wasn’t too worried about his chances in Turin. However, under new coaches Thomas Johnson and Rohan Getzke, the 29-year-old is rediscovering his rhythm and trademark consistency.

Meanwhile, Duckworth continues to perform well at the Kazakhstan ATP 250 event, rising 30 spots to No. 108 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Coboli was unable to cope with the Australian’s relentless movement and pinpoint accuracy throughout the 91-minute match, which saw him save all five break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP statistics.
