PXG’s Mustang ZT adds to zero-torque pushrod lineup

PXG’s latest zero-torque putter features one of the most unconventional shapes.

The company is releasing the new Mustang ZT, its fourth zero-torque putter that has become one of the hottest club categories in the sport.

“With Mustang ZT, we are expanding our zero-torque lineup to give golfers more options that fit the way they play,” PXG founder and CEO Bob Parsons said in a press release.

Read on to learn more about the Mustang ZT putter, who it’s for, and my thoughts on the new design.

What is PXG Mustang ZT?

The Mustang ZT is the fourth model in the PXG ZT line of putters and is based on the Mustang II shape, one of the most unique shapes in the putter line.

Starting with the gooseneck sole, the corners of the Mustang taper outward from the center of the pushrod to increase MOI. To give this putter a “toe-up” zero-torque characteristic, PXG uses its patented “S” hosel to place the shaft axis directly above the putter’s center of gravity.

This design allows the clubface to remain square in any shot type (swing or camber) and eliminates the need for a center shaft design.

PXG also uses a hollow body design infused with its proprietary S-COR polymer to further increase MOI by concentrating mass in the pushrod wings.

To help players keep their hands in front of the clubhead at impact, the Mustang ZT is designed with 1 degree of integrated shaft loft.

The Mustang ZT’s unique shape looks pretty normal when aiming.

Who is the Mustang ZT suitable for?

If you’re looking for a low-torque putter model but don’t like the typical center-shaft design, or prefer a high-MOI blade-style putter, the Mustang ZT may be one of your few options.

While the Mustang ZT is not a traditional blade, it is one of the few high-MOI blade style options in the low-torque segment, which has been dominated by mallet shapes.

Thanks to PXG’s ultra-thin face and pyramid milling technology, the Mustang ZT will also appeal to players who prefer a firmer, milled feel and faster ball speeds.

my thoughts

PXG’s putter options have gotten really strong over the past few years, and a little over a year after launching the first ZT option, they now have a fourth putter option.

In PXG’s ZT line of putters, you can now choose between high-MOI mallets, wing-style mallets, wide-body blades, and high-MOI wing blades.

It’s clear that PXG believes their S-shaped hosel can be applied to the many different shapes they already make, which only gives players more options to find the best putter for their game.

The Mustang ZT’s looks are unique, but won’t unsettle modern gamers. Players who are increasingly willing to trade in exchange for performance.

As someone who is very pro-blade and anti-center shaft, I was eager to try and get a putter that matched the narrower shape I prefer and offered the low torque characteristics without a center shaft.
