Kings player Keegan Murray agrees to 5-year, $140 million rookie contract extension

Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray has agreed to a five-year, $140 million rookie contract extension with the team, Priority Sports representatives Mark Bartelstein and Kyle McAlarney told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.
Keegan Murray enters fourth NBA season
Murray, the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has stayed healthy for most of his NBA career, with the Iowa product playing in 233 of a possible 246 games over his first three seasons. The long-term extension will keep him in Sacramento through 2030-31.
Last season, Murray played in 76 games (all starts), averaging 34.3 minutes per game, 12.4 points, 1.4 assists and a career-high 6.7 rebounds. He shot 44.4% from the field, 34.3% from three-point range, and a career-high 83.3% from the free throw line.
According to Basketball Reference, Murray regressed in the 2023-24 season, with career lows in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, true shooting percentage (55.3%) and usage rate (15%).

However, Murray defended and held the 2025 All-Star to an effective field goal percentage of 46%. That ranks sixth among 76 players who have defended at least 100 shots, according to Second Spectrum.
Murray is also one of three players to have made 500 3-pointers, 150 blocks and 150 steals in the past three seasons, joining Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards and Boston’s Derrick White.
Murray to miss four to six weeks with thumb injury
In addition, a few days before Murray’s contract extension, the 25-year-old tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, requiring surgery and missing approximately four to six weeks.
Murray suffered the injury in Friday night’s preseason loss to Portland, ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported. He is expected to miss at least the first 10 games of the 2025-26 season.
Veteran guard Malik Monk, forward Dario Saric, fourth-year guard Keon Ellis and rookie Nick Clifford are all candidates to take over from Murray.
Dennis Schroder, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Domantas Sabonis are the other four projected starters.
Another potential option is Russell Westbrook, who agreed to terms with the Kings on Wednesday. The former NBA MVP is expected to officially join the team later this week on a one-year, $3.6 million veteran’s minimum contract, sources told Charania.
