Rory McIlroy reveals ‘unfortunate’ part of Ryder Cup fallout

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy was at the center of chaos on and off the court at Bethpage Black at the 2025 Ryder Cup. While McIlroy’s stellar play helped Europe secure a dramatic victory on the road, more attention was focused on the ill-behaved fans who abused Rory, his wife and Team Europe all week on Long Island.
McIlroy took note of this reality and explained the “unfortunate incident” on Wednesday ahead of the 2025 DP World Indian Championship.
Rory says he’s been watching Ryder Cup highlights
McIlroy will make his first trip to India this week for the final event of the DP World Tour season. Currently dominating the DP World Tour season-long standings, he is targeting a fourth consecutive Dubai title and a seventh overall title.
It was also his first tournament since the Ryder Cup, which has been an exciting whirlwind for the five-time major champion.

With the exception of most of Sunday’s singles matches, the story on the Ryder Cup scorecard is one of European dominance. That much was clear to anyone watching the game on TV on Friday or Saturday.
But as the star of the show, McIlroy couldn’t watch it live on television. He’s too busy winning games.
“Obviously, when I play tournaments, I’m focused on winning my own points. You know, you see other people winning tournaments or they’re doing well, but you don’t realize how well they’re playing,” McIlroy said.
However, since the Ryder Cup ended, McIlroy has been able to re-watch the highlights and fully appreciate how well his team performed in the first two days at Bethpage.
“So just in the last two weeks we’ve been able to watch the highlights, especially the first two days, how well the European teams performed in foursomes and foursomes,” he revealed on Wednesday. “The Americans are going to hit it close; we’re going to hit it closer. The Americans are going to hole the putts, we’re going to hole the putts on top, and that happens every time.”
But the reigning Masters champion also identified a problem that has plagued him since the end of the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy laments what was lost in Ryder Cup post-match coverage
The inexcusable abuse McIlroy and company faced during three days of play at Bethpage Black is well known. McIlroy’s emotional reaction in the heat of the moment, as well as the comments he and his teammates made during the Ryder Cup victory press conference, said it all.
Partly because of this, bad behavior from spectators has dominated post-match coverage, as has Europe’s performance on the pitch.
McIlroy acknowledged as much on Wednesday without directly addressing the Ryder Cup’s volatile atmosphere.

“I’ve been following the Ryder Cup story as much as anyone,” he said.
He then proceeds to explain the shortcomings of this popular narrative.
“But unfortunately I think that takes away from our focus, which is the incredible performance of the European teams.”
He went on to lament that people are remembering this year’s Ryder Cup for “the wrong reasons” and he hopes to change that,
“Unfortunately, people don’t remember this, and they remember this week for the wrong reasons,” McIlroy explained. “I wanted to change the narrative and focus on how good the European team was and how proud I was to be part of that team and win the away Ryder Cup.”
They did win. Despite a fierce counterattack by Team USA on Sunday, Rory and Team Europe managed a narrow 15-13 victory, their second straight victory. It was the sixth Ryder Cup victory for a European team in the past eight and the ninth in the past 12 Ryder Cups.
As for McIlroy, who won the Irish Open in his last professional outing, he will join Ryder Cup teammate Viktor Hovland and American Ryder Cup player Ben Griffin in the first round of the 2025 DP World Indian Championship on Wednesday at 9:55 pm ET.
