Callaway’s TCB irons just won again. This is their appeal to Blade players

With Xander Schauffele’s victory at the Baycurrent Classic, it was another win for Callaway’s popular Apex TCB iron platform, the company’s most popular iron platform on Tour.

Including Schauffele’s two major championships in 2024, and Jon Rahm’s victory at the 2023 Masters and 2021 U.S. Open, the TCB platform has won a major in the past five years.

Since its release in 2021, Schauffele has been riding the Apex TCB ’24 and the previous version, the TCB ’21, but the current model’s chassis dimensions are a bit larger than the TaylorMade P750 he rode as a rookie. While TCB stands for “Tour Cavity Back,” the Apex TCB 24 has a slightly larger offset than other irons in its class.

There are other players who have made the switch from pure blades, like Erik van Rooyen, this week’s guest on Golf’s All Gear Podcast. About a year ago, Van Rooyen replaced the 2018 Apex MB blade.

“It’s forgiveness. And curiosity, most of all,” Van Rooyen said of the transition. “I’ve been playing blade clubs since high school. I mean, eventually, technology will probably have some impact on it and improve it.

“It was out of curiosity. I found out that I switched to TCB the week before Sony and the dispersion was tighter. That’s it, the dispersion was tighter.”

The performance advantages are obvious, but TCB and MB are in a very different club than address. “Fully Equipped” co-host Johnny Wunder asked Van Rooyen if that would make the transition difficult.

“I think aesthetically it has to suit my eyes,” he said. “I think I’m very sensitive in that regard. Once something seems so wrong, it’s hard for me to go, oh, just close my eyes and hit. Like, I see it, I feel it.

“But I think the transition was like, it was a lot easier than I thought, and I was impressed. So, yeah, having played Blades for so long, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, man, I might have to try this for like two weeks or so.'”
