Shanghai Masters final: World No. 204 Valentin Vaccello defeats cousin Arthur Lindeknych

The two have played against each other at junior and college levels at Texas A&M, but never in the pros.

The 30-year-old Lindeknech converted his first break point of the match in the third game after a nervous start from his opponent.

With legendary 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer watching from the stands, Vaccello regained his composure and served for the remainder of the game before Lindeknech took the match 6-4.

The second set was equally close, but Vacherot’s excellent backhand from the baseline gave him a crucial break opportunity, leading 5-3 and then holding serve to enter the decider.

There was a short break between the second and third sets for the players to change their jerseys, which were soaked with sweat due to the hot and humid weather.

The timeout did little to halt Vaccello’s momentum, and he saved the third of three break points in the first game of the deciding set with a stunning cross-court backhand.

Lindeknech fought to stay in the match, saving nine of 10 break points in his first three service games before needing a medical timeout to receive treatment for his back.

He was able to resume the match, but it looked empty and Vaccello ended the match with a famous win.
