Ryder Cup venues of the future: What’s next

Ryder Cup venues of the future: What’s next

After being held in even years from 2002 to 2018, the Ryder Cup returned to odd years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits until 2021. This means that, following the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in 2025, 2027 will mark the 100th anniversary of the biennial tournament, which was first organized and played in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Although the field consists of only 24 golfers – 12 each for the American and European teams (since 1979, the team has expanded only from the United Kingdom and Ireland) – the Ryder Cup is arguably golf’s biggest event, and today it requires large facilities with advanced infrastructure to run smoothly. Gone are the days of tournaments held at modest private clubs such as Portland Golf Club in Oregon (1947) or remote resorts such as The Greenbrier (1979).

In the United States, recent Ryder Cup host venues include large private clubs and upscale resorts located in or near metropolitan areas. Despite pandemic-related challenges and a somewhat remote location, Whistling Straits still welcomed more than 150,000 spectators in 2021, largely due to its location just an hour north of Milwaukee.

By the end of the tournament in 2025, the venues for six of the next seven Ryder Cups have been announced, while the European venue for the 50th Ryder Cup in 2035 has yet to be determined. Although the news has not yet been confirmed by the PGA of America, rumors are already rife about the golf course hosting the 2041 Ryder Cup.

Here’s what you need to know about future Ryder Cup venues:

2027 Ryder Cup: Adare Estate – County Limerick, Ireland

Owned by billionaire JP McManus, Adare Manor has grown from a delightful country manor hotel into Ireland’s premier inland golf destination. The golf course at Adare Manor, available to guests of the five-star hotel, is billed as Ireland’s version of Augusta National, with its immaculate parkland golf course redesigned by Tom Fazio, who has consulted on architectural improvements to the home of the Masters for decades.
