If Victor Wembanyama stays healthy in 2024-25, he may win the Defensive Player of the Year. Unfortunately, the injured Wembanyama last season limited 46 games. To win the season-end award, players must compete at least 65 games. Wembanyama did not meet this requirement in 2024-25. In his 46 games against San Antonio, he averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and a league-leading 3.8 blocks.
That was Wembanyama’s second straight season leading the NBA with each game. Wembanyama became the sixth player in NBA history on average four times per game in a season. He will join Mark Eaton, Elmore Smith, Manute Bol, Dikembe Mutombo and Patrick Ewing. If he accomplishes this feat and plays at least 65 games, it’s almost impossible for Wembanyama to win DPOY in 2025-26.

Entering the upcoming season, it is no surprise who is the favorite to win the DPOY bet. Victor Wenbamyama is an elite superstar in defense. No player in today’s game had the same effect on the end of the floor as Wembanyama did. He is indeed one of them and is a favorite to win the defensive player of the year.
