Gael Monfils to retire from tennis in 2026

The 39-year-old’s most consistent period was in the mid-2010s, when the “Big Three” – Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were at its peak.

The Frenchman finished sixth in the world in 2016 after reaching the semi-finals of the U.S. Open when he was defeated by Djokovic.

Monfils’ run at Flushing Meadows was the second of his two major semi-finals in his career, losing to Federer in the last four games of the 2008 French Open.

Monphelis continued: “I never won a Grand Slam in my career when I approached.”

“I’m not going to pretend I hope to do this next year.”

The Frenchman caused a shocking defeat against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 Cincinnati Open.

But Espanyol and world No. 2 Jannik Sinner have won nine of the last 10 Grand Slams.

“The exciting new generation of players is already here and I hope they can enjoy their time on the court as they have been in the past two decades,” Monphelis said.
