Musetti sets Tabilo final in Chengdu

Lorenzo Musetti advanced to his seventh tour and his second of the season at the Chengdu Open on Monday, where he swept out 6-3, 6-1 at the ATP 250’s Alexander Shevchenko.
The Best Seed Italian made his first ATP Tour final last year on a hard court in Chengdu and dropped to Shane in the championship game. According to Infosys ATP STATS, the 23-year-old took another step further this week, with a 92% (24/26) victory on Shevchenko and not facing a breakout point.
Musetti is ranked seventh in the PIF ATP live competition and his goal is to make his debut in the Nitto ATP final. Musetti countryman Jannik Sinner is already eligible for the prestigious end-of-year event from November 9 to 16.
Musetti is the first player to reach the Chengdu final in the history of the game (since 2016) and will compete for his third tour title, the first in Naples since 2022 when he met Alejandro Tabilo in the final.
After one hour and 36 minutes, Tabilo continued his impressive game in Chengdu with a 6-4, 7-6 (0) victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (0).
Tabilo won championships in Auckland and Mallorca last year, but he has been struggling for the past 18 months. He reached Chengdu 5-13 this season, but in the second round of qualifying he survived a decisive victory against Lloyd Harris.
“I think it’s very solid throughout the game,” Tabilo said. “He served well, so I had to stay there and wait. I started well today, performed well, and was happy with the show. It’s been up and down for a few months, so it’s so glad to be back to another final.”
The 28-year-old Chilean is ranked 84th in the PIF ATP Live rankings and will return to the top 100 after the ATP 250 event. Musetti’s meeting with Tabilo will be the first in the couple’s Lexus ATP Head2head series.
