Patrick Reed’s days at Nike and his days with Mike Taylor have been credited to the legendary club designer as he showed him the possibility of having a golf club.
Taylor is a master wedgeman and blacksmith at Nike, best known as the hardcore who has shaped Tiger Woods over the years.
In this week’s golf episode, Reed reflects on his time with Nike’s Taylor and calls it an “incredible” and “eye-opening” experience, showing him his abilities for the golf club.
“You know, when I was with Nick and Mike, in Dallas, it was a bit incredible and excellent to be able to not only be there to watch the club not only built, but also to provide personalized wedges, iron tools and things for the staff players,” Reed said. “I’m obviously a gear, so it’s great to see how it’s done and see the background.
“Like they’ll send us our junior and college golf clubs.
The 2018 Masters champion said he often relies on his short game, so he and Taylor spend hours perfecting the wedge to get the right sound and feel.
“We’re going to take off some, grind some here, grind some there,” Reed said. “I went back there for the test. He was like, it sounded not right.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, it seems like clicking here here.” So he would sit there, we know, for hours, and once we got it, I like it, and it felt great. ”
Once that happens, Reid says Taylor will create molds in the shape they settled, so next time he needs a new wedge, they don’t have to complete the entire testing process again.
