It’s been a 2025 test so far, but the #NexTGenATP star hasn’t let him down when he returns to the action in front of home fans at the Chengdu Open.

The 20-year-old Shang blocked Zizou Bergs with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory on Wednesday at ATP 250, and he canceled the trophy a year ago. Shang started in January until late July with a foot injury, and underwent surgery in March, digging deep into the world’s No. 46 Bergs and won his first game since he returned to the operation.

According to Infosys ATP statistics, the left-handed saved seven rest points he received during his brave performance at the meeting with Bergs’ virgin Lexus ATP Head2head. When the third set broke up, Zhou summoned a 5-3 hit from 0/40, and he stuck to love in his next service match to win his own victory.

He became the first Chinese player to win the ATP Tour title a year ago, not showing much obvious emotion when ending his own victory or embracing the Bergs online. However, he later showed a bright smile throughout the on-field interview after a difficult victory.

Among the competitors of the 2024 Next Generation ATP Finals held by PIF, Shang remains 18th in Jeddah’s live PIF ATP, although he can finish up to eighth by successfully defending his well-being championship. His next test at the Hard-Court event in Sichuan Province was the second round against the fourth seed Brandon Nakashima.

Another Chinese #NextGenatp Wildcard Week YI also disturbed Cameron Norrie by making No. 34, which is also memorable in his Chengdu campaign. The 20-year-old Zhou saved a match point 4-5, 30/40 in the third set, and then won the biggest win in the PIF ATP rankings by 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (2). His next opponent will be Christopher O’Connell, after the Australian shot down Quentin Halys 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4.

Marcos Giron also won the second round in Chengdu on the first day. Giron has gone through his American Ethan Quinn 7-5, 6-4 experience and will be facing the eighth seed Lorenzo Sonego or Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
