Minnesota Wild Can’t Turn Kirill Kaprizov into Marian Gaborik 2.0

It would be a bad look if Minnesota wilderness walks into free agents in the summer of 2026. Now, this is the privilege of the players. We see that before the introduction of the NHL salary cap in the 2004-05 season. Players used to walk to free agents and the team didn’t get much reward. But that has changed, especially in the past decade.
If the NHL team knows they don’t return and sign the extension, hope their players are valuable. They will trade during the deadline based on their position in the playoffs, or they will trade their rights in the NHL draft or before the free agents begin on July 1.
NHL Rumor: This is the term for Kirill Kaprizov
There are recent examples, including late Johnny Gaudreau, who told Calgary Flames that he doesn’t want to re-sign before free agents begin. And he is not the only player. During the past offseason, Nikolaj Ehlers left the Winnipeg Jets for Carolina. The biggest one was Artemi Panarin leaving Columbus to sign with the New York Rangers, while his teammate Sergei Bobrovsky signed with the Florida Panthers.
So, this is the case where the Minnesota wilderness wants to avoid Kaprizov. The team lives with Marian Gaborik. Gaborik was the most important player in Minnesota’s field history at the time. Entering the 2008-09 season, Gaobrik did not expand and the club did not trade him. He went straight into free agents. During that season, Gaborick was injured, leaving him unable to trade, and then he left the free agent to sign with the New York Rangers.
While Kirill Kaprizov and his situation this season, Wild tried to learn from past mistakes. As NHLrumors.com records, this may be more than just money. This would be a term. Maybe he didn’t want to sign for eight years. Maybe he just wants to make a four-to-five-year deal with the wild. Kaprizov wants to see the whole story of this team. He wants to win, and the wild has not shown that they can get out of the first round.
NHL Rumor: Kirill Kaprizov contract is underway. Is he looking for a 20% hat?
The wild doesn’t do much in free agents, but then again, the free agent crop isn’t that good. There is finally room for hats in the wild to sign players again. Over the past few seasons, they have been in the salary cap below the salary cap due to the acquisition of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. Over the next few seasons, these ended up totaling about $2.8 million.
While talking to scouts across the league, Minnesota wild has a great value in players like Kirill Kaprizov. Minnesota found a $15 million season player in the fifth round. Remember, Kaprizov entered the final year of his current deal with a $9 million AAV. This is already valuable to the team and the selected places. The value later became even greater.
Kaprizov knows how valuable he is to the wild. Before his injury last season, Kaprizov was the Hart Trophy conversation for the NHL’s most valuable player. He was the best player in the field in the playoffs and when he came back from an injury he didn’t miss any rhythm. So one reason he is asking is Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, who has an AAV of $14 million.
NHL Rumor: Connor McDavid and Kirill Kaprizov
His value is more to the wild, and the team sees him as a blank inspector. Whether he wants a 20% cap is irrelevant. He wants to win; that’s the key. His last contract negotiations were also long. Some say he wants to start from Minnesota and then sign the day before the training camp in September 2021. So, it can be done next week.
But it felt like a longer negotiation as he waited for what Connor McDavid did in Edmonton’s contract extension. But if GM Bill Guerin knows Kirill Kaprizov has not signed an extension by December, he must seek to trade him and get value to help the club move forward. Remember, Guerin turns Kevin Fiala into Brock Faber. So if Kaprizov doesn’t want to stay, you have to go find him and find out where he wants to go.
If the wild let him walk, it would weaken their franchise in the coming years. Minnesota needs to learn from Marian Gaborik’s situation, either let Kaprizov sign him or trade him to help the club stay competitive in a tough central division.
